vidIQ Alternatives for Finding YouTube Video Ideas

Published October 26, 2026 · Prices and features checked on each vendor's own site on October 26, 2026 · Written by the IdeaPhantom team (we make one of the tools below)

If you use vidIQ mostly for video ideas, the main alternatives are IdeaPhantom (ideas built from the channels you pick, including channels in other niches), 1of10 (outlier research plus AI thumbnails and titles), TubeBuddy (extension-based SEO and channel tools), ViewStats (competitor analytics) and the free manual method. If you also rely on vidIQ's keyword research and AI Coach, a single alternative probably won't replace all of it.

Who this comparison is for

vidIQ is a broad YouTube suite: keyword research, trends, optimization, thumbnails, an AI Coach, idea tools and a connector for AI assistants. This page only looks at one job: deciding what video to make next. We make IdeaPhantom, so we're biased. To keep it fair, every price and feature below comes from the vendor's own pages, opened on October 26, 2026, with links so you can check them. Where we couldn't verify a price, we don't quote one.

What vidIQ does well

  • Free plan: 150 AI credits a month, niche trends, content ideas and AI Coach growth tips.
  • Boost: 2,000 AI credits a month, personalized ideas, unlimited trends research, thumbnails and optimization tools.
  • MAX: 6,000 AI credits a month and everything in Boost.
  • A free AI video ideas generator that works from a niche or topic you type; vidIQ says its ideas come from trending topics and the keywords your audience searches.
  • vidIQ MCP (use vidIQ inside Claude, ChatGPT and other AI tools) on every plan, including Free.
  • Enterprise plans for more than 3 channels or teams, and a 1-on-1 coaching plan.

Price: Boost $19/month or $199/year; MAX $49/month or $468/year (one-channel US list prices; local pricing may vary) (vidIQ pricing, checked October 26, 2026).

Our view: if you want one subscription that covers search, trends and coaching as well as ideas, vidIQ is a reasonable default. Its free idea generator starts from a niche or topic you describe, and vidIQ says its ideas are built around trending topics and the keywords your audience searches. If you'd rather start from specific channels you choose (the ones you watch, admire or compete with), that's where the alternatives differ.

1. IdeaPhantom: ideas from the channels you pick

IdeaPhantom does one job. You add the YouTube channels you follow, admire or compete with, grouped into projects. It analyzes their recent uploads to find which topics and formats attract views, and in under a minute returns 10–25 original ideas, each with a working title, a hook and a description. Niche transfer mode analyzes channels in one niche and generates ideas for another: fitness formats for a cooking channel, for example.

  • Price: Lite $7/month (30 ideas/week); Pro $15/month (75 ideas/week); Ultra $24/month (150 ideas/week); Phantom $35/month (250 ideas/week). Every plan includes projects and niche transfer; Phantom is unlimited with your own API key. Cancel anytime.
  • Free option: no free plan. The free tools on this site run in your browser without an account.
  • Not for: keyword research, tag tools, analytics of your own channel, thumbnails or editing. It doesn't replace those parts of vidIQ.

Here's IdeaPhantom sample output from our home page (Finance):

I Lived on $0 for 30 Days. Here's What Rich People Do Differently

Document a 30-day zero-spend challenge while revealing counterintuitive habits of the wealthy. Focus on time investment over money savings.

“What if the secret to wealth isn't saving more, but spending nothing at all?”

2. 1of10: outlier research plus AI creation tools

  • Free plan: 60 credits a month, 1 connected channel, research tools limited (for example 5 outlier search results).
  • Basic: 150 credits a month, up to 3 channels. Pro: 1,000 credits a month, unlimited channels, MCP and API access.
  • AI title and idea generator: 8 credits per title or idea run, per the pricing page. Research tools (outlier search, thumbnail search, trending formats, competitor tracking) never use credits.
  • The idea generator works from your channel or any competitor channel you enter. Its FAQ says there's no limit on ideas, while the pricing page lists a credit cost per run.
  • Also an AI thumbnail generator and an AI video editor, on the same credits.
  • 7-day money-back guarantee.

Price: Basic $19/month or $180/year; Pro $89/month or $828/year; Ultra $4,999/year (yearly only) (1of10 pricing, checked October 26, 2026).

Our view: 1of10 is the closest to IdeaPhantom on ideas, because both start from what's working on other channels. 1of10 adds outlier search across YouTube, thumbnails and a video editor, and its paid plans start higher ($19/month Basic against IdeaPhantom's $7/month Lite). If you only want ideas, compare credits per idea run with a fixed weekly idea allowance. More options in our 1of10 alternatives comparison.

3. TubeBuddy: extension-based SEO and channel management

  • Paid plans Pro and Legend, plus Enterprise with custom pricing. Some visits to the pricing page showed only Legend and Enterprise.
  • Mostly channel-management and SEO tools: keyword and tag research, bulk editing, A/B testing, thumbnail and title tools.
  • "Next Video Ideas" (in beta): analyzes your channel's videos, performance and comments, plus an optional "niche" (a group of channels you add), and returns a ranked list of ideas showing the signals behind each one, such as niche outliers, keyword competition and audience match.
  • Next Video Ideas limits, per TubeBuddy's Help Center: 3 generations a month on Pro and Star, 15 on Legend; the pricing page lists unlimited on Enterprise. Its Help Center says paid plans only, while the tool page says every plan, so check before you rely on the free plan.
  • A standard license covers one YouTube channel. 30-day refund policy.

Price: Its pricing page showed different plans and prices on different visits on the days we checked (for example two different monthly prices for Legend), so we don't quote one. See their pricing page. (TubeBuddy pricing, checked October 26, 2026).

Our view: TubeBuddy is the usual pick when the job is tags, bulk edits and upload workflow, which is vidIQ's other half. Its Next Video Ideas tool is newer and still in beta. More options in our TubeBuddy alternatives comparison.

4. ViewStats: competitor and niche analytics

  • Positioned as a YouTube analytics suite: compare your performance against competitors, track your niche and spot the formats and ideas that get clicks.
  • Business plan for teams and agencies, starting at $249/month.

Price: Pro is shown in your local currency only, so we don't quote a dollar price. Business starts at $249/month. See their pricing page. (ViewStats pricing, checked October 26, 2026).

Our view: ViewStats suits creators who want to watch competitors' numbers closely and draw their own conclusions. Turning that data into ideas is still your job.

5. The free route: YouTube Studio plus the top-channel method

You don't need a paid tool to get good ideas. YouTube Studio's Inspiration tab is being replaced by Ask Studio (what changed and how to use it), and the Analytics Audience tab can show which other channels your viewers watch, once your channel has enough audience data (YouTube Help). Then run the manual method in our guide on how to find YouTube video ideas from top channels:

Running a faceless channel? Elevate keeps a faceless-friendly list of YouTube video ideas.

How to choose

Our view, by the job you actually need done:

  • Keywords, trends and coaching in one place: stay with vidIQ.
  • Ideas from specific competitor or top channels, or formats from another niche: IdeaPhantom.
  • Outlier search plus thumbnails and editing: 1of10.
  • Tags, bulk edits and upload workflow: TubeBuddy.
  • Watching competitors' numbers: ViewStats.
  • No budget: the free route above. It takes longer, but it works.

FAQ

Is vidIQ free?

vidIQ has a Free plan. On October 26, 2026 its pricing page listed 150 AI credits a month on Free, with niche trends, content ideas and AI Coach growth tips. Paid plans (Boost and MAX) add more credits and tools.

How much does vidIQ cost?

On October 26, 2026 vidIQ's pricing page listed: Boost $19/month or $199/year; MAX $49/month or $468/year (one-channel US list prices; local pricing may vary). It says the final price is shown at checkout.

What's the best free alternative to vidIQ for video ideas?

Our view: the manual top-channel method costs nothing and works for any niche. Pick 5-10 channels, find the videos that beat each channel's usual views, and write down the formats behind them. Our free competitor analysis template, outlier score calculator and video ideas generator help with each step. vidIQ, 1of10 and TubeBuddy also have free plans with limits.

vidIQ or TubeBuddy for video ideas?

Both are broad toolkits, and ideas are one feature among many. vidIQ's ideas come from trending topics and keywords; TubeBuddy has "Next Video Ideas", limited on its Pro plan and included on Legend. If ideas are the main thing you pay for, compare them with a tool built only for ideas before you choose.

Does IdeaPhantom have a free plan?

No. IdeaPhantom's plans are paid, from $7 to $35 a month, and you can cancel anytime. The free tools on this site (generator, outlier calculator, competitor analysis template) don't need an account.

What is niche transfer?

Taking a format that works in one niche and using it in another. In IdeaPhantom it's a mode: "It lets you borrow formats from other niches. Analyze fitness channels but generate ideas for your cooking channel. Same proven structures, completely different topic."
