YouTube Content Gap Analysis: How to Find Videos Viewers Want
A content gap is a video people are looking for that nobody has made well. Finding one gives a new video a reason to exist beyond “another take on the same topic”. Here is how to find gaps and check they are real before you film.
What YouTube counts as a content gap
YouTube's own help page on the Trends tab defines a content gap as a search where viewers can't find enough quality results. It lists three cases:
- Viewers can't find any results for their search.
- Viewers can't find an exact match for their search.
- Viewers can't find relevant videos, for example because the content is old or low quality.
The last case is the most common and the most useful. You rarely find a topic with zero videos; you often find one where the best video is five years out of date.
Where to find content gaps
1. The Trends tab in YouTube Studio
Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Analytics and open the Trends tab, then explore the trending page or search a topic. Look at the Top searches card, the Content gaps for Shorts card, and the content gaps listed under Searched on YouTube. YouTube says some of these insights are limited to certain countries, languages and devices, and that it started rolling out an updated Studio in July 2026, so your tab may look different.
2. The search results themselves
Search the phrase a viewer would type and look at the first page of results. A gap shows up as:
- Top results that are several years old on a topic that has changed.
- Results for a broader or different question (you searched “for beginners”, they are for pros).
- Only one format: long lectures but no quick answer, or only Shorts and no full walkthrough.
- Low quality: poor audio, no demonstration, or the answer buried after a long intro.
3. Comments on your competitors' best videos
Open the videos that beat their channel's usual views (the outlier score calculator finds them) and read the comments. Questions that repeat across several channels are demand that the videos did not cover.
4. Your competitor sheet
In a YouTube competitor analysis, topics that only one channel has covered, and covered well, are open space for everyone else. Old outliers that nobody has updated are another.
5. Neighbouring niches
A format that works in one niche is often missing in the next one over. A 30-day challenge or a beginner vs. pro comparison can be new in your space even if it is common elsewhere. This is niche transfer.
Confirm the gap before you film
Score each candidate from 0 to 2 on the four questions below. This is a rule of thumb we use, not a YouTube metric: a gap worth filming usually scores at least 1 on every line and 6 or more in total.
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Demand | Is there evidence people want it? A search suggestion, a Trends tab content gap, or the same question in several comment sections. |
| Weak supply | Are the current results missing, off-target, old or low quality for this exact need? |
| Your edge | Can you make the best answer? Experience, access, a test you can run, or a clearer explanation. |
| Audience fit | Would your current viewers want it too, or would it attract an audience you can't keep? |
Demand is the one to be strict about. An empty search page with no suggestion and no viewer questions is usually not a gap, just a topic nobody wants.
Turn the gap into a video
- Use the viewer's words in the title, so the match is obvious to the person who searched.
- Answer the exact question early, then go deeper. A gap often exists because existing videos make people wait.
- Fix what the current results get wrong: update outdated steps, show the thing instead of describing it, or narrow it to the right level.
- Need title options? The free video ideas generator turns a topic into proven title formats.

FAQ
What is a content gap on YouTube?
YouTube describes a content gap as a search where viewers can't find enough quality results: there are no results, no exact match, or the videos are old, low quality or not relevant.
Where does YouTube show content gaps?
In YouTube Studio, go to Analytics and open the Trends tab. Search insights there can flag content gaps, including a Content gaps for Shorts card. YouTube notes that some insights are limited to certain countries, languages and devices.
Can I find content gaps without the Trends tab?
Yes. Search the topic on YouTube and judge the top results, read the comments on competitors' best videos for unanswered questions, and compare which topics only one channel in your niche has covered.
Is a topic with no videos always a gap?
No. Sometimes there are no videos because nobody is looking. Confirm demand first: a search suggestion, a flagged gap in the Trends tab, or repeated questions from viewers.
How is a content gap different from a competitor analysis?
A competitor analysis looks at what is working for other channels. A content gap analysis looks for what viewers want that nobody serves well yet. Most creators do both, starting with the competitor sheet.
